The Arrogance of Progress?

I read a quote from Dan Cathy today… this is the CEO of Chick-fil-A who has been in the media recently for his comments on gay marriage and his support of anti-gay groups.  I roll my eyes at most of it, but this quote that I ran across begs for my commentary.

“I think we are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say ‘we know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage’ and I pray God’s mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to define what marriage is about”

I don’t need to make this a long post, but I have a question for Mr. Cathy.  As a society we have moved very far away from the ideals in the Bible.  It’s fairly universal to believers and nonbelievers alike that this is positive progress for humanity.  Although the church is consistently slow to jump on board with these issues, for the most part they now agree that it was right to move on from much of it.  I will spare the readers the references to the Old Testament since that’s too easy (genocide, murder, rape, etc.)  However, let’s take a look at some of the things we’ve moved away from in the New Testament.  I wonder if Mr. Cathy would consider this progress or arrogance?

  • Homosexuals are worthy of death – Romans 1:24-32
  • It is okay to beat slaves – Luke 12:47-48
  • Women are to keep silent in the church – 1 Corinthians 14:33-35
  • Slavery is okay and slaves should respect their masters – 1 Peter 2:18
  • Women should not wear jewelry and should adorn themselves modestly – l Timothy 2:9, and 1 Peter 3 :3
  • It is shameful for a man to have long hair – 1 Corinthians 11:14

This list could be pages long especially if Old Testament rules are noted.  Was it arrogant to end slavery?  Was it arrogant to gives rights to women?  Is it arrogant for women to wear jewelry?  Is it arrogant for women to speak in church?

You know what I find arrogant?  Believing that everyone should follow your religion as you pick and choose the parts that you want to follow.  Believing that your religion should be upheld by a secular government.  Believing that people who don’t agree with you will burn in hell.  I think Mr. Cathy is delusional to not see the arrogance of what he is saying.
